Xiaomi Leads Indian Smartphone Market in Q1, Jio Tops Feature Phone Market: IDC

While the smartphone market in Asia saw a healthy shipment of 30 million products in the first quarter of 2018, Xiaomi maintained its lead with 30.3 per cent share of the market, with Samsung at 2nd location with 25.1 % share, the Global Data Corporation (IDC) stated on Monday.

The 4G function phone marketplace continued to cultivate at significantly more than 50 % quarter-on-quarter, driven mainly by Reliance Jio Phone which led the market with 38.4 per cent share.

The operator disrupted industry by introducing aggressively listed data programs at Rs. 49 inside initial days of the quarter, acting as catalyst for development.

In line with the IDC’s “Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker”, the Asia smartphone market maintained a healthier year on 12 months (yoy) growth of 11 per cent. However, industry remained practically level compared to the past fourth quarter of 2017.

Xiaomi enhanced its share of complete web deliveries from 32 per cent a year ago to 53 % in Q1.

“Xiaomi is within a unique place with a diversified channel method and powerful need in each one of the channels. Huawei’s Honor 9 Lite also converted to the top 5 online models with its debut quarter 2018 Q1,” stated Jaipal Singh, Senior Market Analyst, IDC Asia.

Xiaomi maintained its lead-in industry for second one-fourth consecutively with further expansion in offline channel and rise in popularity of its designs including Redmi 5A and Redmi Note 5.

Commenting on local manufacturing of smartphones, Upasana Joshi, Senior marketplace Analyst, IDC Asia, said: “The current import duty hike on PCBs, camera modules and connections by the Indian federal government, definitely puts expense stress on the smartphone businesses, till these types of time they create lines for CKD (perfect knock-down) kind of manufacturing to lessen this influence.”

“This will raise the challenges for smaller businesses even more,” she included.

Samsung stayed in the second spot with flat yearly development in Q1.

China-based Transsion Group made its first in the top 5 with more than threefold annual growth in shipments in Q1. The China-based group features four companies under its umbrella – Itel, Tecno, Infinix and Spice.
